The Van Arsdell
Stirling Engine



This modern (but Victorian looking)stirling engine uses a rotating magnet to move the displacer without any physical connection between the power train and the displacer.

The magnet is in a rotating tube mounted horizontally over the center of the displacer, and is driven off a flywheel crank.

This engine concept (of the magnetic drive displacer) was originally concieved by Brent Van Arsdell, the president of American Stirling Company, and the engine design was by Michael Crumpton and the machining was by David Culumber. There are some more pics of it here:
