Hi,
My name is Michael Crumpton and I am a sculptor, painter and designer (you can examples of the other things I do here). This site is a small gallery of my most recent sculptures (as of 3/25/04).

There is another gallery of my previous series of work here.

The Fish
These sculptures are the latest in a long series of fish sculptures that I have been doing since the mid eighties. I use discarded materials because I enjoy taking something worthless and encoding value into it by revealing its beautiful aspects.

The pieces are all one of a kind (although there are recurring themes), and are done quite quickly, so they can be affordable. The fish theme has something to do with conciousness or society or something...

The Figures
This series is a ongoing challange to try to coax the subtleties of the human form out of a piece of wet newspaper. I like to try and keep them rough, while getting them peoplelike enough to let the viewer empathise with them.
Construction
The materials are all recycled papers and cardboards from various sources. The polyuretane coatings are for protection from oxidation and durability as well as their aesthetic properties.
The fish are all constructed of a cardboard frame (that is stiffenend with polyurethane for the larger fish) and covered with a skin of magazine paper (usually from Wired Magazine) making them lightweight and durable.

The figures are newspaper that is stiffenend with glue, with a piece of wire or two to give them structure while they dry.

The sculptures are coated with two layers of polyurethane which seals the paper from the oxidizing effects of the air and strengthens the skin as well as providing an easy to clean surface.

Availability
A wide variety of these sculptures are for sale at the Espanola Way Market (in the Drexel Roundabout) in South Beach (In Miami Beach) on Saturday Nights from 6pm till Midnight. The prices range from $10.00 for some small paper mache refrigerator magnets, to $550.00 for a 7ft long marlin which I shipped to Tennesee. I can ship anything anywhere.

They can also be purchased online by emailing me at michael@artformfunction.com or calling 305•695•9619. I also can do specific comissions for special needs. The work is also available at other venues in Maine on a somewhat flexible schedule (call for details).
